MEET ALEXIS

I am at a place of profound peace and happiness. This does not mean my life is free from challenges. Quite the contrary. Here is my story...

It was my womb, the place that was supposed to nourish my firstborn to life, where my son's brain and body suffered severe trauma...a stroke while inside of me. Guilt, shame and anxiety radiated through every ounce of my being when we got his diagnosis and in the aftermath as we navigated the world of disabilities. 

The sleepless nights and fear that would often haunt me started though years prior when I lost someone I loved in the terror attacks on 9/11.

 

Yet even before that, I felt unworthy of wholeness. I was an only child trying to keep peace and love present in my parents' explosive relationship, but felt like the utmost failure when their marriage ended in divorce.

I was always searching outside myself for happiness. Yet, when I became a professional on Wall Street I quickly realized that money and success most definitely didn't afford me joy and stability. Stressed out, overworked, and spread too thin, I was lost and perpetually anxious waiting for the next trauma to unfold.

My firstborn, who was only 3-years-old at the time, gave me the wake-up call I so desperately needed.

"Mommy, are you mad at me?" he asked one afternoon when we were leaving a play date with neurotypical peers, once a trigger for me.

The darkness and pain that I inflicted on myself for what my warped mind told me I caused wasn't only suffocating me, but it was punishing him. This beautiful child (and my other two children) deserved untainted, unconditional love always. It was my deepest desire to give that to them.

 

I learned to meditate as a last ditch effort to try to quell the anxiety that corroded my mind because my family deserved a better version of me. In just a few short weeks, meditation transformed my entire existence. The cloud of stress, fear, and panic dissolved to such a degree that I began to feel lighter, happier, and more present than I ever had before. It helped me see that all of my life challenges were propelling my growth, helping me evolve in meaningful ways. I was no longer the victim, things were no longer happening to me - they were happening for me. Meditation helped me see that it wasn't just my kids who deserved a best version of me, I did too.

 

Nothing about my circumstances changed, only my mindset.

The roles I currently play as wife, mother of 3, meditation coach, and writer shape my daily life and allow my consciousness to develop in immeasurable ways. Meditation is my daily tool to recharge my soul, access calm even in chaos, and embrace the very life in front of me with gratitude.

 

We are all worthy and capable of living a beautiful life. When we face our most heart-wrenching or debilitating challenges, it’s easy to let the light within us diminish to barely a flicker or think it has been extinguished. It hasn’t. Each of us has the power to rekindle it, heal and grow.
